Key Assignments
Evaluation of the Process and Outputs of CCSP Supportive Supervision
UNICEF assigned SCS to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of its CCSP program’s Supportive Supervision component, envisaging that the findings from the assessment would be used for strengthening CCSP implementation (focusing on under five year children) in the State and guiding the state government in scaling up supportive supervision initiatives in the remaining 13 districts in the State. The findings of the evaluation and assessment were helpful in UNICEF’s advocacy around increasing NRHM investment on supportive supervision for CCSP. Another purpose of the assessment was to also guide the second phase of activities for strengthening CCSP. Thus this assessment served as the baseline for the second phase of CCSP-SS activities in Uttar Pradesh.
Child Rights Situational Analysis (CRSA)
SCS had carried out a CRSA for ‘Save The Children’, whereas overall aim of the study was to come up with a broader picture on the Child Rights situation in the state of Uttar Pradesh under the thematic lenses of Protection, Education, Health & Nutrition and Children’s vulnerability of any natural and/ or political calamity as delineated in Save the Children India’s Strategy for 2012-16. This study was helpful in forming Save the Children’s approach and programming strategy for the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Rapid Analysis of Human Trafficking issues in Uttar Pradesh
SCS has been instrumental in documentation of a status report on ‘Human Trafficking’ in Uttar Pradesh, this report is based on desk review of secondary data. UNICEF Lucknow had commissioned this assignment to SCS for assessing the current situation of Human Trafficking especially child trafficking, scope of work included identification of major trafficking routes with regards to UP, analyze and illustrate state plans of action/policy development initiatives, initiatives undertaken by various stakeholders, etc.
Adolescent School Girls Health-Education Programme
This is a long-term programme supported by Johnson & Johnson Ltd. and implemented by SCS in seven states of India namely, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat and West Bengal. The program is specifically aimed at promoting the importance of personal health and sanitation, especially menstruation hygiene amongst the school going adolescent girls. Purpose of this program is to bring about a positive change amongst adolescent girl’s healthy behaviours specifically personal hygiene, anaemia, right age of marriage, nutrition, teenage pregnancy etc. Local level female volunteers are identified and trained by the SCS’s resource persons, who then discuss these issues with the girls, under a healthy and friendly environment.
SCS has reached out to more than 1.5 Million school going adolescent girls since 2005.

Assessment of Radio Programme
It was an assignment to assess the reach, recall and quality of the 13 episodes radio program broadcasted through All the 12 transmission channels of India Radio across UP and 1 transmission channel of MP (Bundelkhand). It was a UNICEF supported project
Mapping of Urban Areas for Maximizing Vit A Immunization
SCS has done mapping of 110 wards of Kanpur city to identify the gaps in Vitamin A coverage at the ward level, this mapping exercise included ward wise mapping and preparing a ward boundry map, plotting of existing social groups, government and private resources, left out population and area and also to point out the potential point of coverage to maximize the reach and coverage.
Study on “Social Exclusion in Water and Sanitation”
The organization has conducted a study in Uttar Pradesh to understand the phenomena of social exclusion in the context of ‘Water and Sanitation’. The objective of the study included contextualizing exclusion, discrimination & inclusion, understanding extent, factors & dynamics, mapping of the most vulnerable/ excluded groups and identifying alternatives for reducing disparities. This study was carried out for WaterAid in all four regions of Uttar Pradesh namely, Eastern, Western, Central and Bundelkhand.
Rapid Assessment of Women SHG movement in U.P.
SCS has conducted a rapid assessment of SHGs in UP including their financial status, bank linkages, status of enterprise and impact on social issues. SHGs covered, were promoted by NGOs, government agencies and departments and NABARD. This study was supported by the Department of Planning, Government of U.P. and UNICEF, Lucknow.
SCS has also been associated with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), UNICEF, FHI, UPSACS etc. and executed several assignments. Some of the major assignments are “Stories of change from watershed development programme” of Rajasthan, Documentation of several workshops & conferences, multilingual translation of training manual, reports, documents etc. These documents have also been published and widely distributed for cross learning.
Panchayati Raj Election Help Line
SCS had instrumental role in managing the Central Intervention Unit (CIU), a helpline for NGOs and community in UP during panchayat level elections in 2005. The CIU acted as the bridge between the state election commission and NGOs. CIU counselled and guided candidates and NGOs in cases where irregularities and election related crimes were reported. This assignment was jointly funded by Action Aid, CRS, DFID and CASA.
KCCI Internship Program
SCS is the host agency in UP for the internship program of Knowledge Community for Children in India (KCCI), a UNICEF initiative. SCS has hosted and facilitated a team of National and International interns for documenting impact of two different programs of UNICEF in UP, which are Village Planning of Lalitpur District & Adolescent girls’ education Program of Barabanki District. SCS also facilitated these interns for preparing two case-studies and a 10 minutes Documentary film, titled ‘Weapons of the Weak’: Empowering people through self – help. The resource persons from SCS provide supportive supervision to interns in process documentation.
Organizing Events of Social Concern
SCS is the coordinating agency for Institute of International Education (IIE) for organizing workshops, conferences and meetings across the country (India) in selected regions. SCS is also the agency designate to organize events of social concern for UNICEF and Department of Planning, GoUP.
Championing the Well-being of Senior Citizens
The well-being is a multi-dimensional indicator which incorporates the following needs: Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical, Environmental, Financial and Occupational. As part of our commitment towards senior citizens SCS has shortlisted a series of activities to target the well-being of seniors.
- Development of a network of Self-Help Groups for the Elderly with SCS as a mother club.
- Edutainment/Social gatherings for members of the SHGs
- Training and Workshops with external stakeholders developing inter-generational connections between youth and seniors, and promoting productive-ageing for seniors.
- Quarterly Newsletter for our SHG club members highlighting SCS activities and content pertinent for senior well-being.
- Research and publication of studies looking closer at issues of productive-age and elder care in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
- Advocacy for implementation of Policy for senior citizens and establishment Directorate of Old Age and a commission for senior citizens.
Annual Report Development
SCS has been instrumental in collating all the relevant information duly made available by UPSACS and its Technical Support Unit (TSU) in the form of an Annual Report. This task of developing Annual report for UPSACS was duly supported by USAID funded Family Health International's Project Samarth.
Assessment and documentation of polio program
SCS provided professional support in developing the content for this manual which was prepared by the Uttar Pradesh State Aids Control Society in collaboration with UNICEF Office of Uttar Pradesh and with support from State Institute for Health and Family Welfare, Uttar Pradesh. This manual has been prepared for the state government employees of various departments. The document is user friendly and hence can be used in a multicultural and multi-sectoral setting by people coming from different backgrounds and social segments. This document can also be used as a primer for readers especially those who are uninitiated in the world of HIV/AIDS.
Assessment of ICDS-IV project
Prior to moving towards an ambitious phase of ICDS IV, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India commissioned a study to assess the impact of ICDS III, so as to identify the gaps and built upon the lessons learnt during implementation of current phase.
Assessment of SSA program
Conducted a survey of Education for All program through a participatory approach, whereas structured interviews and FGDs were conducted with teachers and community members residing under catchment area of 21 primary schools and upper primary schools. It was done with an objective to assess quality of the education program focusing on Teaching Learning including a detailed mention of whether there is multi-grade/multilevel teaching, classroom organisation, teaching methods used, teaching learning materials used, tools used for assessment, nature of assignments- class work & home work given, recapitulation methods used, if technology has been used, any innovative teaching learning method/ material used , practices for punishment & reward etc.
Assessment of water& sanitation program of Swajaldhara & ARWSP
Two of the flagship programs focussing on drinking water, Accelerated Rural Water Supply Program and Swajaldhara were evaluated through a participatory approach
Audio Visual and Print Documentation of Mini Olympic
Udaan 2007, a two days mini special Olympics for differently abled children was held on 1st and 2nd December 2007. The event was jointly sponsored by “Liliane Foundation” and the “Catholic Diocese of Lucknow” and organized by the “Diocesan Social Work Society of Lucknow”. SCS provided support in coordinating and conceptualizing the video and print documentation of the event. The documentary (developed both in English and Hindi) depicted the preparation and experiences of organizers, participants and their guardians during the Udaan 2007. The film also captures the energy, courage and joy of the special children who participated in this event. The print and the video document both offers a hope that guardians of disabled children recognize their hidden skills and talents and motivate them to become part of the society.
Audio Visual Documentation of Fatima Hospital's 50 Years Journey
The documentary is an endeavour of Fatima Hospital to look back into its 50 years of diligent efforts and to acknowledge the persons, institutions, beneficiaries and other stakeholders who have rendered their five decades of selfless support
Data Analysis of Vitamin A coverage status
SCS analysed the Micronutrient Initiative India's (MII) data of 38 districts on Vitamin A coverage and Bal Swasthya Poshan Mah (BSPM) for assessing the coverage status and evaluation through monitoring indicators data analysis.
Diarrhoea Alleviation Through Zinc and ORS Therapy (DAZT)
SCS in partnership with AED-ARTS, LLC, a subsidiary of the Academy for Educational Development in partnership with a consortium of organizations is implementing DAZT project to reduce and rationally manage childhood diarrhea. DAZT aims to reduce morbidity and mortality related to diarrheal disease amongst children less than 5 years of age. The project aims to increase child survival in India, and contribute to improved child health outcomes and provide actionable information for diarrhea treatment and dehydration management efforts around the world. SCS is implementing this project in collaboration with Impact partners in Social Development. The project area is all 12 Tahsils of Bareilly and Budaun Districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The BEADS activities have been continuing for a long period of time without any assessment, therefore SCS was awarded an assignment to carry out an evaluation of its activities and suggest way forward for the organization. Evaluation of Child Labour project of Ghunghroo Industry
After completion of the four year project it was considered by UNICEF to conduct an external assessment to get a more comprehensive understanding of the outcomes of the child focussed intervention. Documentation and Media Management of Women's day program organized by CRS at St. Francis college. This program was inaugurated by the District Magistrate of Lucknow
Organizing Baal Sammelan
Don Bosco Ashalayam in collaboration with renowned civil society organizations of Lucknow and with support from UNICEF Office of Uttar Pradesh organized a one day event on 2nd October 2005 titled “Bal Sammelan” to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Bal Sammelan served as a forum to disseminate information about dangers of HIV/AIDS, methods of prevention and protection and its impact. SCS provided documentation support to capture the key events organized during the day long activities with a special focus on capturing the joy, learning and experiences of both the organizers and participants.
Process Documentation of INHP Program
The purpose of this documentation exercise was to take into account the experience and lessons learnt while implementing and facilitating the INHP III ,(A flagship program of CARE India focussing women and children in joint collaboration with ICDS) at various levels over the project life.
Promotion of sanitary napkins for Menstrual Hygiene in 10 flood effected districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh
SCS had been instrumental in facilitating the UNICEF's emergency response program through awareness generation amongst reproductive age group women regarding menstrual hygiene and also provided a platform to the department of health for a PPP model whereas Johnson & Johnson provided the supplies of Sanitary Napkins, Government provided storage, upkeep facility and ensured distribution of the same through their service providers at the village level (ANM & ASHA) and UNICEF provided funding support

Short listing and grading of NGOs
SCS had been commissioned to shortlist the NGOs based on a minimum eligibility criteria fixed by WSSO and the grade the duly qualified NGOs on a mutually agreed grading criteria format.
Stakeholder Consultation and Impact Assessment
These assignments were undertaken to assess the environmental and social aspect of the impacts of these projects on the community, environment, and livestock in advance so as to minimize the negative impacts.
Study of CRS Rajasthan's Watershed Management program
Catholic Relief Services’ Jaipur office, under the Institutional Development program commissioned this assignment to capture the most significant activities that women members have been engaging in over the past few years. Most of these activities were recorded through interaction with women, which happened during field visits to the watershed program area. This exercise profiled the unique contribution that women can and do make as leaders in the struggle for social justice.
Trend Analysis of Livelihood program
A joint intervention was initiated by the Department of Labour, Government of UP and Unicef to improve the situation of working children in Jalesar. The project focused on promotion of community based institutions (SHGs), augmenting their capacities so that they could opt for other sources of livelihood and sensitizing sectoral departments on the need for a convergent approach targeting at risk families and their children. SCS did a trend analysis of this project, which was focussed on: results achieved, challenges faced, and lessons learnt in course of the implementation process. The focus was also given to come up with recommendation for future course of action in terms of structure and synergy to achieve optimal results.
